It can lead to physical consequences such as hypertension, digestive troubles, chronic aches and pains and heart problems. Chronic stress can also negatively impact mental health because it's linked to a higher risk of depression, anxiety and insomnia.”

Interestingly, the term work-life balance first gained traction in the U.K. during the 1980s as part of the Women’s Liberation Movement. Advocates called for maternity leave and flexible schedules to help women manage both work and family responsibilities. Over time, the concept expanded beyond gender, evolving with new workplace trends and technological innovations.

Establish clear working hours and stick to them. During work time, focus on your tasks fully. When work is done, disconnect from emails and calls so you can dedicate time to personal life without distractions.
Once your workday ends, give your full attention to family, friends, or personal activities. Constantly checking emails or handling client calls after hours can disrupt family time and prevent you from recharging.
Prolonged sitting or working non-stop can harm your physical and mental health. Take 5–10 minute breaks every couple of hours to stretch, walk, or simply rest your eyes. A short break outdoors or a moment in the garden can refresh your mind and boost productivity.
Make space for activities that relax and recharge you. Whether it’s reading, exercising, enjoying a spa day, or taking a family trip, self-care is essential to maintain balance. Pair this with healthy habits—nutritious meals, hydration, and regular exercise—to keep your body and mind strong.
Work-life balance has evolved from a women’s rights issue in the 1980s into a universal need in today’s digital age. While technology has made work more flexible, it has also blurred boundaries. The key is to use digital tools wisely, create clear distinctions between work and personal life, and prioritize self-care.
